Dear Lame Prospekt,
Sorry about my angry post. I shouldn't have said anything, not personally being involved in your business and all. I was pissed because of your "Lameslam" comment and still am, but I apologize.
Sincerely,
Geminita

I think that every woman has those fashion icons who just shaped who they became. Whether it was Twiggy, Bette Paige, Audrey Hepburn, or someone more modern, or more obscure, there is someone we saw in our childhood who personified everything that we wanted to be. Exploring these things can uncover and unlock some subconcious leanings that I have found to be surprising.
Thinking on this I can think of at least half a dozen women who are grace, elegance, coolness, intelligence, attitude, femininity.. All of the things that I wanted to be from the time I painted my toenails Rio Red and devoured stacks of Cosmopolitan and felt very mature for a middle school girl. I think about Charlotte from Lost in Translation (played by Scarlett Johansen), how every time I watch that movie I want to be her. With her outward self confidence and effortless clean look, her love of cigarettes despite them being bad for her, her soft mysteriousness. The intimacy between Charlotte and Bob in the zebra streaked hallway of the Karaoke Studio, the pink bob and silver smoke . Audrey Hepburn as Sabrina displayed a level of elegance and independence that I found quite lovely. The scene with her wearing the pretty A-Line black dress and flats sticks with me when I shop to this very day, far more than her couture moment in white trains.
Watching Ghost World again reminded me of what I loved when I was younger, and I still love Enid for her balls to the wall style and unabashed love of what she loves. I have far more in common with this graphic novel protagonista than I sometimes care to admit. I rally identify with her plight, her infatuation with someone who is all wrong, her lies catching her up, her fears and insecurity alienating those closest to her.. Her cynicism and sarcasm. She really is a soulmate in so many ways.
When I trace this all back to the root, though, it all comes back to 1994, seeing Pulp Fiction when I was 10 years old. Mia Wallace embodied everything desirable about womanhood. Her style, her musical taste, her way of carrying herself.. I loved everything about her and couldn't get enough. Her look was modeled after actress Anna Karina who also appeared in Bande à part. Mia's personality was said to recall Michelle Pfeifer from Scarface. I don't particularly care of Uma Thurman as an actress (she's not bad, just not one of my favorites) but this is one of my favorite characers from a film, ever.

Second Saturday Handmade Market at Bubblehead Tea
I'll be down at Bubblehead Tea this Saturday from Noon to around Four. Alamo City Etsy will be meeting at 2pm during the Market, so if you're interested in vending at our events, just show up to fill out an application.
I'll have my magnets and paintings set up at 1035 S Presa, so come get some bubble tea and support your local starving artist. You'll be able to see my lobsters, several of my cupcakes, and my completed Pink Cupcake of Guadalupe (which showed in the Gallery Eleven Anniversary Show).

The Bad Cat Jewelry will be set up as well, you can visit her store here. The bracelet above (Autumn) and the rest of her collection will be set up from 2pm until around 7pm. She is one of my favorite jewelry designers and I just featured another one of her bracelets on The Violet Showcase.

Something new..
I'm working on developing a new style, something a little more organic and abstract while still retaining the accessibility and my favorite subjects and themes. This is the fruits of that labor, my first effort with this different approach. I call this Symbiotic Oceana.
I'm starting on a new painting in this style soon. I'll post progress shots as things move along. This piece is up for sale in my Etsy store. Click here to go check it out.

I'm a model, you know what I mean?
I just got home from the Deeva fashion show, Curves in Color. I'm still wearing this amazing hair and makeup, which looks like a rusted Ziggy Stardust with the hair of an Afrocentric disco queen. It looks fierce, so props to the Paul Mitchell school, especially Sable (who did my makeup) and Cindy (who did my hair). I'll post pictures as soon as I can, but I just had to say what an amazing job DeAnna did on putting that show together. The designs were beautiful, the decor was tasteful and I'm so incredibly proud of her.
